Conclusion A big drawback from the previous series has been fixed: setting the focus works much better thanks to the touch screen.But overall the operation is still somewhat fiddly at certain points.The large display of the upcoming HF S series will thus come in handy. On the minus side we have the low light capabilities, the missing zebra mode and the small wide angle.A plus is the lowered price, as well as the cinegamma/25p-mode and the fact, that the camera, given enough light, produces very consistent images in the auto mode.Audio-only recording, Xacti-Library-Function and adjustable ISO are features that the more established rivals lack.Furthermore this camera offers great manual control in combination with the display of relevant parameters such as focus-distance or shutter.Even the low-light performance of the camera is remarkable for this price class.Nonetheless the camera has several flaws, eg. the lacking support for the european 50 HZ standard.Due to the bumpy image stabilisation and the poor automatics the camera is not very suited for newbies who want a simple camera for holiday trips.Ambitious videographers on the other hand will not be able to fully appreciate the manual control due to the handling, and the small wide angle will surely be a nuisance.In terms of sharpness the camera can only compete with its rivals in the 30p-mode.
