Pros + APS-C chip with interchangeable lens
+ complete manual control over iris, shutter, gain, white balance
+ image settings can be adjusted
+ good picture impression
Cons - no control over audio, no level indication
- no motorized zoom
- no focus assist options
- low color resolution
- color moirees
Conclusion The NEX-VG10 is a nice camera which makes great video recordings with bokeh, and also shows good lowlight capabilities -- even with the not so ideal kit lens.Iris, shutter, gain and white balance can be controlled manually (and separately), and also the image characteristics may be adjusted. But in comparison with present DSLRs Sony missed the occasion to add another dimension to "large-sensor-filming".Hardly any feature can be found that could not be had elsewhere (for considerably less money even). The audio section is rather meager for a 2000 Euro camcorder. The Sony HDR-HC7 shines with very good brightness resolution, but tends to show quite visible color moires on very fine details. The color resolution is only on SD-level, which makes for a rather soft image impression. The noise behavior has been improved compared to its predecessor - along with the few smear-effects this provides very good image dynamics. In terms of color the HC7 is neutral. The wide angle is very limited for indoor shots, lens errors keep whithin limits though. In low-light situations the HC7 produces somewhat colorless and dark images. The touch screen brings no points in the configuration score.
