Pros + APS-C chip with interchangeable lens
+ complete manual control over iris, shutter, gain, white balance
+ Very good image quality impression
+ 20x zoom
+ handling well-conceived
HDMI out
+ 25p
Cons - Image characteristics can not be changed
- no motorized zoom
- Scaling artifacts
-less Wide-angle than FX1/A1/HVX200
Conclusion A large imaging sensor and manual control when filming, coupled with the handling of a classic camcorder. This combination is offered by no other manufacturer in this price range. But due to the fixed image characteristics a flat film look can not be achieved.Since the image quality is comparable only to medium-level HDSLR, the device offers few advantages over the DSLR-competitors besides the familiar form factor.A zoom rocker or an ND filter would be a nice addition.Furthermore Sony needs to realise that to a large extent it is the manual control settings that make companies like Red, Canon or Panasonic successful in the large-format sensor world. The Sony HVR-V1 makes the most of the three 1/4-inch CMOS-converter .The brightness resolution is good, the color resolution lacks somewhat. The progressive mode offers more vertical resolution, but shows occasional color artifacts.Low noise and little smear effects together with excellent automatics make for a very good subjective image impression. The 20x lens shows comparatively few errors like aberrations or distortion, but the wide-angle could be larger for this price range.Lowlight performance of the FX7 is good, the plus points being low noise and the optional hyper-gain.
