Pros + good picture impression
+ portable
+ partly professionally equipped
+ Sharpness and lowlight behavior
+ Some good manual control
+ Touch Focus
+ good auto modes
Pros
Cons - color resolution only average
- DV-quality only average
- Automatics never completely switched off
- No support for AVCHD
- our test model produced unsharp areas at the right image border
- hardly any control
Cons
Conclusion Like its consumer twin HC1 the Sony HVR-A1 has a very good brightness resolution, but tends sometimes to show color moirés on fine details. The color resolution is not on a HDV-level, though the CMOS sensor theoretically should have more reserves. The overall picture impression is good, partly due to the good dynamics behavior with little noise and few smear-effects.Color-wise the A1 is fairly neutral, almost somewhat low-key.The wide angle is very limited for indoors, but on the other hand there are only few lens errors. In low light situations the A1 loses color fast.Compared to the HC1 it is slightly better equipped in terms of sound and image. The handling remains only satisfactory due to the touch screen. With the HMX-S10 Samsung shows the company is able to build cameras that can compete technically in the 1000 Euro league. The camera hardware is more than adequate for this price. But software-wise there is more emphasis on colorful animations than practical usability. The small lens wheel does in any case only make limited sense, as long as you cannot inhibit the camera from automatically changing the settings. The display, however, is really impressive and also the manufacturing of the camera seems very solid. The camera shows few dark sides but also no highlights for this price range. The wide angle as well as the sharpness and low light performance are ok for this price. If the unsharp area at the right image border is a problem only of our particular test model and not af the whole series, the camera can be recommended to those who do not value any manual control options. Conclusion
